Over the years, I have helped many people with depression and anxiety. Since the lockdown in 2020, these issues have skyrocketed, especially among teenagers and children. The rise in anxiety and depression in Generation Z may be affected by digital media, mixed social messages, and conflicting educational standards.
Even though researchers have studied depression a lot, they still don’t fully understand what causes it. Many believe it results from a mix of genetic, emotional, and environmental factors that can upset brain chemicals like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. It’s unclear if these chemical imbalances cause anxiety and depression or if they happen because of them.
The most common treatments are medications and therapy. Other helpful suggestions include eating well, exercising, maintaining a positive attitude, and practicing meditation.
Not many people know, but Chinese medicine, especially acupuncture, can offer a very powerful relief for anxiety and depression. This is because Chinese medicine helps with both physical and emotional issues at the same time.
How can acupuncture assist those with high anxiety or depression?

According to Chinese medicine, feelings like anxiety, depression, stress, anger, and fear are caused by something called “Disturbed Shen.” What is Shen? It can be thought of as the human spirit. This spirit is very sensitive and powerful; when the Shen is out of balance, a person may struggle to be happy or healthy. Disturbed Shen usually shows up in the Heart meridian, but it can actually come from issues with the Liver, Spleen, or Kidneys.
Example 1. Someone with a significant blockage in the Liver meridian might feel a lot of stress, frustration, or hidden anger. This liver issue can affect the heart meridian, leading to symptoms like heart pain or irregular heartbeats. In this case, an acupuncturist would likely start by calming the liver, which can help support the heart.
Example 2. During menopause, women often go through strong mood swings, hot flashes, and night sweats. It’s common to feel depressed during this time. The kidneys play a major role in hormone changes. When the kidneys are supported, the heart can also become stronger because they are closely connected. Acupuncture can help address emotional issues that arise during menopause.
Example 3. A person with chronic digestive issues is more likely to be depressed than those with healthy digestive organs. It is common to see cranky, whining people among those with chronic digestive disorders. The most fundamental sustaining power of our bodies is provided through our digestive organs. Low energy levels and fatigue caused by weak digestive functions negatively impact one’s Shen. So, the most important organs to treat for this person are the stomach and spleen, along with the intestines. When digestive functions improve, the energy flow through the heart meridian will become much stronger.
Most acupuncture patients feel incredibly relaxed and peaceful after treatment. If you have not tried acupuncture, or if you want to have a really good handle on your anxiety or depression issues, you may want to visit an acupuncturist’s office.
